Owners Story:

We moved into Briar Patch in January 2010, having fallen in love with it just 9 weeks earlier. It was previously owned by The De La Salle Brothers - a Catholic Order of monks who had enjoyed a close association with St Peters School since 1947.

We bought Briar Patch as a family home for the 7 of us and spent the next couple of years restoring the interior to its original glory, uncovering many beautiful features as we did, exquisite fireplaces in most rooms, panelled doors and a spindled staircase that had all been boarded over.

The first memories of living here that made us truly appreciate the history that surrounds the house and the special place it has held in many hearts was two tiny old ladies appearing on the doorstep and enquiring if the window seat was still here? It turned out they were evacuated here in WWII and had fond memories of sitting in the “telephone cupboard” on the window seat calling home to London! We have had many such visitors over the years sharing their stories.

This summer our family enjoyed a momentous occasion when our eldest son & daughter in law held their wedding reception in the garden. It was truly amazing, a huge marquee, festoon lighting - just beautiful.

Our overarching memories though must be of the wonderful times we have spent in the garden sat around the fire pit by the hot tub. Down there surrounded by the trees, it is like being in the woods somewhere away from it all but we can still hear the sea and a two-minute walk would bring us down to the glorious sandy beach.

Some people may be put off by the idea of the school next door, but we can honestly say that the only time we are aware of it is first thing in the morning & mid afternoon as the school fills and then empties again. The area immediately next to Briar Patch is not often used by the school and so we remain undisturbed.

Leaving this beautifully unique house will be a huge wrench and nothing will ever replace it for us. It has been a privilege to live here & build the memories we all have but it is a big old house when the children are grown, and another family deserves to enjoy Briar Patch.
